The Southeastern NC Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America proudly hosts the 2016 North Carolina Region Spring Meet in historic downtown Goldsboro on Center Street. The City of Goldsboro has recently undergone a sixteen-million dollar downtown infrastructure & beautification streetscape project complete with water features, street-art displays and traffic roundabouts. The downtown area is alive with restaurants, unique shops and businesses, plus the Wayne County Arts Council and Wayne County Museum, all within walking distance of the Center Street show field.
Brief History of Goldsboro: When Wayne County was formed in 1789, the town of Waynesborough developed along the banks of the Neuse River around the county courthouse that was built there. In the late 1830’s, the Wilmington and Raleigh (Weldon) Railroad line was built to the east of Waynesborough. At the intersection of the railroad and the New Bern Road, a hotel was built and a community began to establish itself. This community became known as Goldsborough’s Junction after Major Matthew T. Goldsborough, an Assistant Chief Engineer with the railroad line. The town of Goldsborough was incorporated in 1847, and the name officially changed to Goldsboro in 1869. The City of Goldsboro became the county seat for Wayne County in 1847 and has expanded to an area encompassing over twenty-five square miles. It is also a railroad & highway transportation center for the area’s agriculture, business, and industry, plus its major role in national defense.
Location: Located in the Coastal Plain region of eastern North Carolina, the City of Goldsboro is the county seat of Wayne County. Conveniently located on Interstate 795 and highways US 70, US 13 and US 117, Goldsboro is within minutes of the I-40 and I-95 corridors.
Goldsboro/Wayne County Today: Goldsboro is one of North Carolina’s metropolitan statistical areas (US Census Bureau MSA) with a metropolitan population of approximately 125,000 people. Recognized as a Top-Ten-US-City by Money Magazine in 1993, the City of Goldsboro takes great pride in providing an excellent quality of life. The City of Goldsboro is the proud home of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, home of the 4th Fighter Wing. Seymour Johnson received the Commander in Chief’s Installation Excellence Award – Air Force for 2001, the highest award given to a military base. Spanning more than five decades and five wars, Seymour Johnson AFB’s 4th Fighter Wing is one of the most distinguished fighter units in the world. The 4th Fighter Wing of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, puts air power on-target, on-time for America. The wing is home to the multi-role, all-weather F-15E Strike Eagle and provides worldwide deployable aircraft and personnel capable of executing combat missions in support of the Aerospace Expeditionary Force. The base is named for Seymour Johnson, a native of Goldsboro, and Navy test pilot who died in an airplane crash on March 5, 1941. Seymour Johnson AFB occupies 3,300 acres within the city limits of Goldsboro.
