2021 AACA Southeastern National Pictures

2021 Southeastern National Show Sept 9-11, 2021

By Brian Wingler

The South Carolina Region AACA hosted the 2021 Southeastern Fall Nationals at the Benson Campus of Greenville Technical College in Taylors, SC September 9-11, 2021. Besides the business meetings, on Friday a tour of the local BMW plant, a judges school, and a catered BBQ dinner was available. The car show took place on Saturday the 11th. That being the 20th anniversary of the 09/11 terrorist attack on the US, the Region honored First Responders as part of the gathering. Approximately 200 vehicles were registered for the show and with the very accommodating weather probably most of them were there. Some of the highlights for me were the 1911 Thomas Flyer and the 1934 Packard V12. There was also the 1941 Chevrolet Fire Truck restored by the members of the local Greer, SC fire department. This truck was part of their fleet from new, sold, and eventually donated back to the department. There was a 1920 Anderson, made in Anderson, SC with the radiator badge which proclaimed: ”Anderson, A Little Higher In Price, But Made in Dixie”.

2020 NC Transportation Museum Display

NC Transportation Museum News

By Tom Wright
The 2019 NC Region Muscle Car exhibit at the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC is over and the display was wonderful.  The NC museum held a brief ceremony to recognize the NC Region members who had displayed their Muscle Cars at the Museum during January and February. Executive Director of the Transportation Museum Kelly Alexander, current NC Region President John Allred, and previous NC Region President Bill Cox addressed the group and presented the awards. The awards for the participants were certificates and special train car plaques commemorating the event. The certificates and plaques both included a special new logo designed by David Allen.  NC Transportation Exhibit Coordinator LeAnne (Kathryn) Johnson, who worked closely with Tom Wright to coordinate the exhibit, was presented a Certificate of Appreciation from National AACA. After the awards ceremony Kellyanne serve us the best cake with a buttercream icing!

The museum has asked me to look into an exhibit of Mini Cars for 2020. Most of the mini cars I’m familiar with were produced in England and Germany. If you know an NC Region or chapter member who owns a mini car and who would like to participate in the 2020 mini car exhibit at the museum, have them contact me. Please encourage your members to let me know by 30 April 2019 if they have a car or cars they would like to exhibit.   The 2020 exhibit is planned to run December 2019 through February 2020.  A shortage of mini cars will of course change the theme of the exhibit, and require another theme and type of car to be chosen.

2019 NC Region Annual Membership Meet

2019 Annual Membership Meeting January 18-19
By Denny Oestreich

A brief report of the NC Region Annual Membership Meeting January 18-19, 2019.

The NC Region Annual Meeting was held at the newer Raleigh Ramada Inn. There were over 100 members attending the event which is about the same as past years events.  The Friday afternoon schedule included an AACA Judging School presented by Dain King.  The Judging School was followed by two Continuing Judges Education (CJE) courses taught by Mike Peterson (Vehicle Documentation) and Dain King (Exterior Judging).  These were very informative sessions.

On Saturday NC Region Board meeting was held at 8:30 am.  At 10 am a representative of the North Carolina State Patrol (NCHP) discussed the organization, duties and special responsibilities during Hurricanes. NCHP has detailed plans for coverage, assignments and contingencies during these emergencies.

At 11 am Tom Cox, AACA National President gave and overview of the status of the plans to renovate and occupy the new headquarters building .  Tom informed us that the facility will serve all of the 65,000 members.  AACA must raise  $3 million to renovate the facility to properly support the AACA operations,  the growing AACA Library and facilitate the Hershey Car show. An AACA Capital Program is underway and members are urged to donate.

After lunch the Annual Membership meeting was held. 2018 activities and 2019 plans were discussed. New Officers were elected including John Allred, President and Asby Armistead, Vice President.  Five new Directors were also elected including Charles Wells, Carl Anthony Bright, Bynum Hancock, Mike Kraus and Linda McAdam.  Awards were presented for special vehicles shown at the NC Region Spring and Fall Meets.  Awards were also presented the Chapter reporters the contributed to every NC Region Newsletter. The 2018 Circle of Honor award was presented to Paige Lyons for her many years serving as the Past NC Region Secretary/Treasurer. The 2019 Dave Hinkle award was presented to Jack Harris for his many contributions to the NC Region and to AACA.

2019 AACA Southeastern National Meet Pics

2019 Southeastern National Meet Pictures

More Pictures below by Bill Cox and Denny Oestreich

We are so blessed to have such a grand AACA event in our back yard… well, maybe it’s not exactly around the corner, but easy enough to get to for a weekend. I went down Friday morning in the rain… not the best time to go, but I was able to get down there, have some lunch and greet some friends in the AACA tent by the showfield. After lunch, the mist was tolerable and I actually got to spend a few hours in the flea market and had a good time.

The displays inside the buildings always have something interesting and this year there were El Caminos and land speed racers (LSRs). These are the rocket shaped race cars built to set speed records on the Bonneville salt flats. I enjoyed both of these displays, but the prize possession here was a 1970 Monte Carlo that was treated to an incredible restoration to a concours level. It was certainly the best I have ever seen.

Saturday promised to be a better day with dry weather and temps in the 70s. It did not disappoint as I arrived at the judges breakfast around 7:00 to meet friends from around the country who had come to join the fun on the show field. There were 250 judges present to review 301 cars. It was overcast in the morning, but that gave way to clear sunny skies and 70 degrees in the afternoon. There were lots of folks from the NC Region, Alamance Region, Mountain Regions and of course all those Hornets Nest folks with those yellow hats… they certainly looked like a swarm of bees all over the place.

As cars started pulling in to the field, my eye was drawn to the 1917 Locomobile as it pulled in to be greeted by Mel Carson, our new AACA President. I wasn’t alone as many people turned to see it drive in and enjoy something you don’t see very often. Equally engaging was Jim and Becky Aldrich’s 1923 Stutz Touring Car. A beautiful little touring car that you can just imagine traveling the back roads of America in the roaring 20s! These and many other fine automobiles are what brings me to Charlotte every year. As a judge, I get to see some extremely nice cars, either restored to very high levels, or preserved with care to maintain originality. We are very fortunate to be able to see these examples of automotive history so close to home. If you haven’t been to an AACA National recently or at all, I highly suggest you put it on your list of things to do. You’re sure to have a great time, and… you meet the nicest people!

Happy Motoring,
Bill

2019 NC Transportation Museum Display

2019 NC Transportation Museum Muscle Car Display

The NC Region of the AACA and the NC Transportation museum have created a display of vehicles of the AACA. The display theme for the first display of this kind is “Performance cars of the 60’s and 70’s -The Muscle Car Era.”  Ten members of the NC Region have provided their muscle cars for this inaugural event. Vehicles were chosen to represent the qualities of a muscle car of that era.  The vehicles on display are AACA original cars of high quality and unique equipment that are not often seen by the general public.

The display which will run thru January and February of 2019. Tom Wright is the chairman for the project and has worked closely with Jack Harris and Kathryn Johnson (Le Anne) at the museum to put this together. This is an exciting opportunity for the NC Region of AACA to display membership information about our club at the display. Be sure to visit the museum and see the display.
