Sandhills Chapter News – August 2014

Parade 2014

July began with Hurricane Arthur overhead,
While visions of Fireworks danced in our heads.
And much to our relief, we suffered no grief.

AACA Leads July 4th Parade
The 4th of July turned out to be a perfect day for the Pinehurst Parade. The crowds were large and appreciative.  The Sandhills Chapter of AACA led the parade right behind the Color Guard with 23 of our gems. Happy Ferguson was the Grand Daddy of the Parade with his 82 year old 1931 Ford 4 door sedan.  As has been the custom for many years, after the parade, our vehicles were parked right behind the announcer’s stand where the spectators could have an up close look at our vehicles.  Some owners invited spectators and their children to sit in their vehicles and have their pictures taken.  There were just as many adults who wanted their pictures taken as there were children.  This up close experience had a profound impact on them. You will note that I listed the age of Happy’s vehicle as well as the year it was built.  I think that people don’t always do the math and sometimes they are surprised at the age of these vehicles.

We handed out 3 New Member forms of which one couple; Doug & Gretchen Phillips, signed up and paid up that day. We hope that the others who showed interest will follow-up and join our group.  This is part of what these activities are aimed to accomplish.

Unfortunately our Picnic was not as successful as we had hoped.  Only 5 members and 4 vehicles met at a reserved spot behind the Race Track barn. The village had reservations about allowing us to display our vehicles since last year they had problems with another group who claimed to be the AACA group.  Diana spent several days and several trips to the village hall to resolve the issue. Her Southern Charm won out, but not until the day before the event.  This didn’t give members much time to make or break their plans.  Hopefully next year we can resolve this long before the 4th so that we can tell you where and when our picnic will take place.

July 17th- seven members met at the Snack Shack for our scheduled Cruise-In.  We were delighted that New Members Doug and Gretchen Phillips and two of their 6 children joined us. Doug has two Dodge Darts, 1972 & 1975.

July 18th- eight of our members showed their vehicles at the Sandhills Street Rod Club Cruise-In at Mac’s on Rt 1.  There were many fine looking vehicles displayed with lots of lookers. Can you believe it?  Gretchen Phillips won the 50/50 drawing.  These new members are proving to be Winners.
